PINK
BEAUTIFUL TRAUMA
$12.99(sale priced)
There is just no excuse to not love P!nk: the woman is exceptionally talented, gorgeous, and possesses a strong, independent spirit that has set her apart from her contemporaries for over seventeen years now. With graceful triumph, this firecracker returns on Friday, October 13th with Beautiful Trauma on RCA Records. Returning after a five-year sabbatical, P!nk offers up her seventh studio offering, the phenomenal Beautiful Trauma. With production credits split across Jack Antonoff (of the band fun.), Steve Mac (Demi Lovato, One Direction), Max Martin (Katy Perry, Taylor Swift) and Shellback (Adele, Taylor Swift), the thirteen-track album was destined to be an amalgamation of sounds, from Pop to R&B, sultry dance numbers to piano-accompanied ballads. You cannot possibly pin a good woman down, and P!nk makes damned sure of that on this go-round!
BECK
COLORS
$11.99(sale priced)
Singer-songwriter Beck has never been very good at hiding how he's feeling. If you made it through the defeated melancholy of 'Sea Change' without wanting to hurl yourself off a cliff, congrats. But the thing is, Beck doesn't hide when he's happy either. The 10-track 'Colors' is Beck's most accessible, radio-friendly offering in years but, this being Beck, it's brilliantly layered, with plenty of interesting things happening under the hood. There's pan flute, handclaps and glockenspiel on it, for goodness' sake. Beck hasn't been this overtly poppy since 'Midnite Vultures' in 1999 but that was harsh-sounding and more than a little nutty in comparison. 'Colors' is smooth and warm and light. In fact, there are plenty of allusions to Beck emerging from darkness. 'Found our way through the lost years/ Now the day brings it all here,' he sings in the title song.
NINE INCH NAILS
ADD VIOLENCE (EP) (DIG)
$5.99(sale priced)
Nine Inch Nails second EP in a year is as perplexing and immediate as their first. Trent Reznor has lost none of his power to discomfit and intimidate. Its external circumstances rather than internal dynamics that account for NINs fear factor today. Their ferocious performance of 'Shes Gone Away' on episode eight of the Twin Peaks revivalrather uncontroversially viewed as the most artistically ambitious hour of television ever airedrevealed that Reznor has lost none of his power to discomfit and intimidate. Placed alongside David Lynch and Mark Frosts visions of atomic fire, indestructible doppelgangers, skull-crushing demons, and slithering insectoids, Nine Inch Nails fit right in.
ST VINCENT
MASSEDUCTION
$11.99(sale priced)
Full of glorious contradictions, Annie Clarks fifth St Vincent album, Masseduction, is leaded with pitch-dark content but sounds so wonderfully joyous at times that its hard to feel too oppressed. Touted as her 'pop' moment (the album is co-produced by Jack Antonoff, who has previously worked with pop luminaries Lorde and Taylor Swift), right from the off - with Hang On Mes pulsing bass and drowsy, sensual synth melody matched by the erotic intensity of Annies vocal it is clear that something special is in the offing. With a palpable honesty, she sings intense stories of lust (Savior, playing erotic stock-character dress-up as nurse, teacher, nun, with an outfit that rides and sticks to my thighs and hips; Young Lover bluntly admitting: I miss the taste of your tongue) and love, but always skewed to the fatalistic, dangerous or gone-wrong varieties. You and me, were not meant for this world, she intones in the dramatic, gripping opener almost revelling in the doomed nature of the affair. Key track Los Ageless repeats, like an incantation or a plea: How can anybody have you and lose you and not lose their mind too?
BARNETT COURTNEY / VILE KURT
LOTTA SEA LICE
$13.99(sale priced)
In a year fraught with emotional intensity and existential drama, the lighthearted Lotta Sea Lice, Courtney Barnett and Kurt Viles new collaboration, is a welcome change of pace. Rooted in the artists mutual admiration, the album finds Barnett and Vile celebrating one another in a way that highlights increasingly revealed common ground. What began as an idea for a split single evolved into a full length and that evolution is on full display on Lotta Sea Lice. The duos piecemeal approach to recording, eight days in the studio over almost 15 months, is heard in the uneven final product, but what the album lacks in structural consistency it repays in their undeniable chemistry. Lotta Sea Lice finds Barnett and Vile making it up as they go to vital results. The albums meandering low-stakes approach projects the artists comfort with and confidence in each other, illuminates their process and hints at greater possibilities.
ROBERT PLANT
CARRY FIRE
$13.99(sale priced)
Robert Plant, scraggly-hair icon and eardrum-busting Led Zeppelin frontman, is back with his latest solo effort Carry Fire. Earlier this fall, he debuted the singles The May Queen and Bones of Saints, as well as Bluebirds Over the Mountains, a duet with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. This is his 11th solo record and follows 2014s Lullaby And the Ceaseless River, recorded with his band The Sensational Shape Shifters. You wont hear Plants impossibly high-pitched wails of old on this recorddecades of challenging the limits of the human vocal register will tire even the most indefatigable rock iconbut his signature folk mysticism and global influences are easily found, particularly on the title track. Plant also explores Appalachian roots music and a more stripped-down take on rural blues.
UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS
VOL 1
$11.99(sale priced)
Of the many Sabbath inspired groups that have formed in the 21st Century, Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats have consistently stood out to me as the best and most authentic vision of that late 60s, early 70s sound we have come to associate with labels like doom, stoner, and fuzz. Whether or not these words accurately describe a band like Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats, whose own influences extend heavily into psych and early hard rock as well, is insignificant. Heavy metal is a genre with deep roots, canonized eras, and many subcategories to choose from. At this point, its an umbrella term that can be used to denote five decades worth of bands, sonic progressions, and even fashion styles depending on ones age and personal tastes. Everyone may associate it differently, and for me, this is the sound of Heavy metal.
MARILYN MANSON
HEAVEN UPSIDE DOWN
$12.99(sale priced)
On Heaven Upside Down, his 10th album, Manson embraces the tropes that made him a menace and a rock star and a stalwart of goth. Songs called SAY10 and JE$U$ CRI$I$ sound like someone making fun of witch house band Salemits telling that, in 2017, Manson doesnt come off like a parody of himself but of his musical descendants. Unlike 2015s The Pale Emperor, which had buckets of bass-heavy glam rock decadence coursing through its veins, Heaven Upside Down adopts a serrated industrial tone more reminiscent of 1998s Mechanical Animals, with a smattering of juicy guitar licks that harken back to Mansons 1994 debut Portrait of an American Family. On his 10th album, Marilyn Manson embraces the tropes that made him a menace and a rock star and a stalwart of goth. This is his turf, and rather than expand it, he seeks to defend it.
