Bad Brains - Build A Nation ($10.99) [This album is crazy. Nobody sounds like this band, thank God. A mixture of punk (70%) and reggae(30%), it sounds so tight and focused. Great job producing from Beastie Boys. Hightlights are 'Give Thanks...' and 'Universal Peace.' Actually, this band is not known for reggae, but the reggae tunes are quite strong as well. ]

Tab Benoit - Power of the Pontchartrain ($13.99) [Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's 'Midnight and Lonesome' is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of 'Shelter Me.' 'Somebody's Got to Go,' originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty 'For What It's Worth' takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics.]

Bryan Ferry - Dylanesque ($13.99) [Long a Bob Dylan fan, Bryan Ferry remade 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' for his 1973 self-titled album of covers. This time around, the celebrated Roxy Music leader turns in Dylanesque, recasting 11 Dylan classics during a single live-in-the-studio week that leaves the album sounding vibrantly faithful to the original numbers. Far be it for the imaginative contrarian to retrace Dylan's steps, and sure enough--despite an omnipresent harmonica--Ferry does just the opposite. The raw rocker 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' becomes a seductive British pop song, while despair and loneliness turn into effervescence for the driving 'Simple Twist of Fate.' Ferry's ageless tenor injects a modern momentum into early Dylan imprints 'Positively 4th Street' (with strings!), 'All I Really Want to Do,' and 'The Times They Are A-Changing,' and gloriously respects the more recent 'Make You Feel My Love' (from 1997's Time out of Mind). But the best is yet to come, as the oft-covered 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' may never have received better treatment and 'Baby, Let Me Follow You Down' loses not a beat of its original knock-down luster. ]

Grateful Dead - Three From The Vault ($19.99) [Proud to present this magnificent gem from the band's historic February 1971 Port Chester NY run that closes the loop on the seminal From The Vault series - the series that spawned all other Grateful Dead vault releases. A glowing tribute to one of the band's most prolific chapters, abundant with classics and lovingly captured in HDCD audio. Features the second-ever performances of Loser, Bertha, Playing In The Band, Greatest Story Ever Told and Wharf Rat, plus the world premieres of Bird Song and Deal.]

Silverstein - Arrivals & Departures ($12.99) [Whether it spawns from Silverstein's killer list of influences or something thats less of a stretch, this band just does something right. I'd figure the band's perpetual use of catchy elements, commonly found in choruses, and their outright post-hardcore composure would be an abrasive combination. However, Arrivals and Departures sees the band pull it off nearly flawlessly. This is not to say Silverstein is the second-coming, but its refreshing for me to find a band with 'Screamo' listed under the genre assortment in Myspace that doesn't turn me in the other direction almost immediately. ]

Social Distortion - Greatest Hits ($13.99) [The best thing about this record is that the tracks are put in chronological order so you can sit back and listen from track 1 to track 11 and hear their progression through their 20+ years. Mike Ness is a master storyteller and guitar player and this Hits record showcases that. The mixing on the album also stays true to form (I expected no less from Mike Ness and TimeBomb Records though...they have always and will always stay true). You won't find any high production add-ins with the mixing. The tracks still sound as if they are being played on the original record...except now you don't have to crank the volume up to hear the music, instead you can crank the music up because it's amazing and timeless. ]

TI - TI vs TIP ($14.99) [This is the hottest album of the summer. It is worth every penny you'll pay for it. On the first listen I only didn't love 4-5 tracks and music always gets better the more you listen to it. You better go get your copy NOW!!! It's T.I.'s best album so far. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the rap/hip-hop album of the year.]

Velvet Revolver - Libertad ($12.99) [Libertad is all about hand-grenade chords, drag-racing riffs, and circus-tent choruses. The ageless McKagan and Slash continually gun for the disorderliness of their former band (most notably on the punkish opener 'Let It Roll' and its lewd brother 'Spay'), while Weiland sounds--knock on wood--positively clean and like a voice of boisterous renewal on tracks like 'Mary Mary,' 'She Builds Quick Machines,' and the melt-in-your-mouth cover of ELO's 'Can't Get It Out of My Head.' Obviously egos have been checked at the studio door, as Velvet Revolver have already exceeded their anticipated existence. And now that existence goes back on the clock, trying to outshine a second album that's head-and-shoulders better than the first.]
