Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger ($10.99) [I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful--the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams. Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention. ]

Bad Brains - Build A Nation ($10.99) [This album is crazy. Nobody sounds like this band, thank God. A mixture of punk (70%) and reggae(30%), it sounds so tight and focused. Great job producing from Beastie Boys. Hightlights are 'Give Thanks...' and 'Universal Peace.' Actually, this band is not known for reggae, but the reggae tunes are quite strong as well. ]

Beastie Boys - Mix Up ($13.99) [The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions. ]

Tab Benoit - Power of the Pontchartrain ($13.99) [Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's 'Midnight and Lonesome' is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of 'Shelter Me.' 'Somebody's Got to Go,' originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty 'For What It's Worth' takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics.]

Bryan Ferry - Dylanesque ($13.99) [Long a Bob Dylan fan, Bryan Ferry remade 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' for his 1973 self-titled album of covers. This time around, the celebrated Roxy Music leader turns in Dylanesque, recasting 11 Dylan classics during a single live-in-the-studio week that leaves the album sounding vibrantly faithful to the original numbers. Far be it for the imaginative contrarian to retrace Dylan's steps, and sure enough--despite an omnipresent harmonica--Ferry does just the opposite. The raw rocker 'Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues' becomes a seductive British pop song, while despair and loneliness turn into effervescence for the driving 'Simple Twist of Fate.' Ferry's ageless tenor injects a modern momentum into early Dylan imprints 'Positively 4th Street' (with strings!), 'All I Really Want to Do,' and 'The Times They Are A-Changing,' and gloriously respects the more recent 'Make You Feel My Love' (from 1997's Time out of Mind). But the best is yet to come, as the oft-covered 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' may never have received better treatment and 'Baby, Let Me Follow You Down' loses not a beat of its original knock-down luster. ]

Grateful Dead - Three From The Vault ($19.99) [Proud to present this magnificent gem from the band's historic February 1971 Port Chester NY run that closes the loop on the seminal From The Vault series - the series that spawned all other Grateful Dead vault releases. A glowing tribute to one of the band's most prolific chapters, abundant with classics and lovingly captured in HDCD audio. Features the second-ever performances of Loser, Bertha, Playing In The Band, Greatest Story Ever Told and Wharf Rat, plus the world premieres of Bird Song and Deal.]

Brad Paisley - 5th Gear ($13.99) [Like his friend Vince Gill, Brad Paisley has achieved the often-difficult feat of reconciling being an entertainer and world-class guitarist. He's proven that on four admirable albums, and 5th Gear follows in that vein. Certainly 'Ticks,' an airy, radio-friendly ditty, is not the true substance here. That comes with such superior fare as the insightful 'All I Wanted Was a Car' and 'Online,' a sly satire of people's Web facades. While his duet with Carrie Underwood ('Oh Love') is a bit cut and dried, Paisley ably handles 'Letter to Me,' 'It Did,' and 'Mr. Policeman,' a 21st-century outrun-the-law tune. The closing hymn, 'When We All Get to Heaven,' and ripping instrumental 'Throttleneck' are Paisley at his best. It's admirable that he invites his venerable buddies, Little Jimmy Dickens, George Jones, Vince Gill, and Bill Anderson, along with Dolly Parton, to join in, but the obligatory 'Kung Pao Buckaroos' skit is wearing a bit thin. Better to feature them musically, the way he includes Dickens, Gill, and Anderson on 'Bigger Fish to Fry.' In a time where lines between county and pop are blurring far too much, it's comforting to know Paisley still realizes and respects the differences. --Rich Kienzle]

Social Distortion - Greatest Hits ($13.99) [The best thing about this record is that the tracks are put in chronological order so you can sit back and listen from track 1 to track 11 and hear their progression through their 20+ years. Mike Ness is a master storyteller and guitar player and this Hits record showcases that. The mixing on the album also stays true to form (I expected no less from Mike Ness and TimeBomb Records though...they have always and will always stay true). You won't find any high production add-ins with the mixing. The tracks still sound as if they are being played on the original record...except now you don't have to crank the volume up to hear the music, instead you can crank the music up because it's amazing and timeless. ]

White Stripes - Icky Thump ($12.99) [The White Stripes are back with the most bombastic album they've ever produced! While revealing the band's roots in American folk music, Icky Thump is an explosive, revolutionary assault that brings together garage rock, every blues style of the past 100 years, nouveau, and flamenco. This is truly a modern rock and roll masterpiece!]
