Dave Alvin - Live from Austin Texas ($11.99) [Live from Austin TX, part of a series of CD and DVD releases from the Austin City Limits archive, features former Blasters songwriter and guitarist Dave Alvin recorded on January 29, 1999. On these 13 tracks, Alvin and his awesome backup band, the Guilty Men, tackle three songs from his then-current album, Blackjack David -- 'Mary Brown,' 'Abilene,' and the title cut -- along with a few tunes from the 1994 release King of California and, of course, fan favorites 'Border Radio' and 'Marie Marie,' which were initially recorded with the Blasters. The highlight of the set is another Alvin-penned Blasters track, 'Jubilee Train,' which is transformed here into a medley that incorporates Woody Guthrie's 'Do-Re-Mi' and Chuck Berry's 'Promised Land.' ]

Tori Amos - American Doll Posse ($13.99) [Tori Amos shed the red hair, split into five personalities and decided to rock. As a result, _American Doll Posse_ is her most vibrant, eclectic and relevant album in years. It's sort of a compromise between the tight production of _Choirgirl_ and the sprawling anger of _Pele_ -- all translated by Pip, Santa, Isabel, Clyde and Tori. Who are they? Doesn't matter. They're wigs. They're dresses. They're elaborate excuses for Tori to scream things like 'You've been skankin' around with your talentless trash!' ]

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare ($11.99) [While this sophomore release is unmistakably Arctic Monkeys, everything's a little more muscular and aggressive. Each song is embedded with revelatory moments, as if some sort of critical mass is achieved through skillful song craft and sharp arrangements until an explosive release of energy or emotion is inevitable. Arctic Monkeys have exceeded expectations with this record. ]

Dinosaur Jr - Beyond ($11.99) [now the original trio (including drummer Emmett 'Murph' Murphy) has reunited for the first time since Barlow's split, and the 11-song outcome makes one ask: Why did they wait so long? Mascis's thunderous 'Almost Ready,' featuring both his combustible guitar and weary vocals, is the perfect blast-off, allowing Murphy's backbeat to set a turbulent pace early, and while songs like 'Been There All the Time' and the Neil Young accolade 'This Is All I Came to Do' have Mascis as primed as ever, Barlow (whose '90s-era Sebadoh set the bar for lo-fi bands) reappears with two of the record's strongest tracks: the poppy 'Lightning Bulb' and 'Back to Your Heart,' which recalls late-in-the-game Hsker D. These 50 minutes of music are as cohesive as they are conquering, and whether the same can be said of the once-prickly relationship between Mascis and Barlow will ultimately decide if this is a one-off reunion or if the real Dinosaur Jr. is back for awhile.]

Bebel Gilberto - Momento ($12.99) [Momento continues Gilberto's trend of crafting sultry scenes of afternoon delight via tunes that both adhere to traditions and sound ultra-modern. But she also mixes things up a bit in the process. Gilberto's sensual delivery--featured here in English and in Portuguese--hovers in and around each song, more an extension of the rhythms than the showpiece. Make no mistake, though: Gilberto's vocal work is a thing of beauty. She again blends bossa nova, samba, pop and electronica flourishes, but no one genre overpowers any other. Liliting guitars give way to pulsing percussion and horns, which crash against loops and samples.]

Nightwatchman - One Man Revolution ($12.99) [For more than a decade, Tom Morello used earsplitting riffs to make his point, first with Rage Against the Machine, then with Audioslave. But on his solo debut as the Nightwatchman, the man named one of Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists of all time tries a different approach. Taking cues from six-string radicals such as Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash, Morello reinvents himself as a singer-songwriter armed only with an acoustic guitar, gravelly baritone, and renewed political fervor.]

John Prine & Mac Wiseman - Standard songs for average people ($12.99) [It was the legendary Clement who paired smart-ass folkie Prine and bluegrass totem Wiseman, but the singers themselves chose the repertoire, which reads like songs people of a certain age might pick on a dry drunk. The tunes range, believe it or not, from religious hymns to covers of Patti Page's 1957 hit 'Old Cape Cod,' Kris Kristofferson's underrated 'Just the Other Side of Nowhere,' and Tom T. Hall's 'Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine,' with a little Elvis and Ernest Tubb thrown in for good measure. It's fitting that Prine and Wiseman revisit the Hall standard, since oddly, both singers vocally favor the Nashville storyteller from time to time.]

Frank Zappa - Classic Album: Apostrophe / Over-nite sensation ($10.99) ['This is where you go to find every aspect of Frank's music squeezed into two perfectly formed records.'Dweezil Zappa. This new addition to Eagle Vision's acclaimed Classic Albums series focuses on Frank Zappa's early seventies albums 'Overnite Sensation' (1973) and 'Apostrophe(`)' (1974). Together they encapsulate Zappa's extraordinary musical diversity and were also the two most commercially successful albums that he released in his prolific career. As ever the program uses interviews, musical demonstrations, rare archive and home movie footage plus live performances to tell the story behind the conception and recording of these groundbreaking albums. TRACKLISTING: Features excerpts from: -Dinah-Moe Humm -I'm The Slime -Montana -St Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast -Dirty Love -Cosmic Debris -Stink-Foot & more. ]
