Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha ($10.99) [Strip away the music of an Andrew Bird song, and you're left with brilliant prose ('across the great chasms and schisms and the sudden aneurysms'), vignettes about mentally fending off plane crashes, infiltrating characters like the kings of Macedonia and Lou Dobbs, and titles such as 'Yawny at the Apocalyspe.' ]

Jorma Kaukonen - Stars in my crown ($12.99) [The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-enshrined guitarist and founder of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna returns with a stunning acoustic masterpiece, his first new recording since 2002's Grammy-nominated Blue Country Heart. Continuing the journey through American roots music he started in the early 1960's, Jorma cooks up a tasty collection of down-home blues, bluegrass, folk, country gospel and reggae. Stars In My Crown was recorded in Nashville and is rooted in classic Americana, flavored with a laid-back bluesy feel. ]

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists - Living With The Living ($12.99) [For their fifth full-length release (and first with Touch and Go Records), Ted Leo and the Pharmacists met up with Brendan Canty (Fugazi) to iron out a new set of anthems that arrive with a confident and outspoken immediacy. With Living with the Living, Ted & Co. wipe clean the slate that once held names like Weller, Strummer and Bragg and indulge some of their farthest-reaching musical ambitions.]

Low - Drums And Guns ($10.99) [Low quickened their paces and rustled up a new sound. Producer Dave Fridmann helped out in '05 and is back for Drums and Guns, Low's 2007 follow up, a return to pre- Great Destroyer form. Slowing down again and training the musical lamps on Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk's austere voices, the trio sets a decidedly somber tone (the album's opening line, delivered with pregnant pauses: 'All soldiers, they're all gonna die/And all the little babies, they're all gonna die' and album-closing song titles: 'Murderer' and 'Violent Past').]

Middian - Age Eternal ($9.99) [Middian... born from the ashes of YOB. In 2005, Mike Scheidt, founding member of YOB, faced the tough decision of introducing yet another set of members to YOB or abandoning the project completely. It was his final choice to let go of YOB that paved to way for his current project, Middian. ]

Modest Mouse - We were dead before the ship even sank ($12.99) [We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like 'Missed the Boat,' 'Education' and 'Little Motel.' ]

Skaggs Ricky / Hornsby Bruce - Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby ($12.99) [Virginia cool meets Kentucky thunder in a collaboration between genre-bending pianist Bruce Hornsby and multi-instrumental virtuoso Ricky Skaggs that expands the terrain of bluegrass. Highlights include a meditative, minor-key transformation of Hornsby's 'Mandolin Rain' (with Skaggs on the title instrument) and a downhome revival of 'A Night on the Town,' though newer originals such as 'The Dreaded Spoon' seem slight in comparison.]

Joss Stone - Introducing Joss Stone ($13.99) [British soul singer and songwriter Joss Stone's third album, 'Introducing Joss Stone,' is an electrifying mix of warm vintage soul, '70s-style R&B, Motown girl-group harmonies, and hip-hop grooves. The album is the one that Stone describes as 'truly me. That's why I'm calling it Introducing Joss Stone,' she says. 'These are my words, and this is who I am as an artist.' ]

Amy Winehouse - Back to black ($8.99) [Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility.]
