Air - Pocket Symphony ($12.99) [Some bands like to thwart expectations, and Air is one of them. 'Spacemaker,' the opening of Pocket Symphony, sounds like a cousin to their instrumental retro-lounge 'La Femme D'Argent' from 1998's Moon Safari, right down to the electric bass break in the middle. But this isn't a return to their breakthrough sound. 'Spacemaker' really does pave the way for an almost classically somnolent outing from the French duo. Air once proclaimed, 'In any classical song you can take five seconds of it and make a loop and you make a great pop song with it.']

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible ($8.99) [For their second full-length, the Montreal-based seven-or-eight-piece Arcade Fire show themselves capable of Big Rock, as original, and as potentially marquee-topping as TV on the Radio and Sigur Ros. Regardless, the intentional murkiness of these pleasantly anthemic New Wave dirges makes it sound as if the music has already reverberated through a crowded cement stadium. Named after cult author John Kennedy Toole's first novel, Neon Bible is smart and subtle enough to present itself as a personal discovery for every listener, every word to be pored over by fans (as with those of Tori Amos, Pavement, and Radiohead). ]

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Calling ($13.99) [In recent years, Mary Chapin Carpenter--once among the most promising stars of the folkie infiltration of Nashville ('Down at the Twist and Shout,' 'I Feel Lucky')--abandoned all desire to dot the country music charts. Free of that ill-fitting yoke she returned to being what she really was all along: A literate acoustic singer-songwriter.]

Ry Cooder - My Name Is Buddy ($15.99) [On My Name Is Buddy, Ry Cooder revisits, in a new set of original material, the sound and feeling of the 'dust bowl songs' he first explored more than three decades ago on such groundbreaking albums as his self-titled 1970 debut and 1971's In The Purple Valley. In fact, he's joined by old friends like pianist Van Dyke Parks and drummer Jim Keltner who were with him at the start of his extraordinary, ultimately globe-spanning musical odyssey, which has yielded him six Grammy Awards to date, several more nominations, and perennial acclaim. ]

Albert Hammond Jr - Yours to keep ($10.99) [If it took a solo album for Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. to make sure his songs were finally heard, file this one under 'their loss' for those egocentric East Siders. The first in the group to make his own record, Hammond (son of the triumphant '70s singer and composer) comes up big, hammering out 10 songs brimming with beatific melodies ('Call an Ambulance'), sugary harmonies ('Scared'), and the same rampant guitar ('In Transit') that he wields with the big band. He recruits prominent pals Sean Lennon and Ben Kweller for the ride.]

RJD2 - Third Hand ($11.99) [From its opening instrumental lullaby, The Third Hand crafts a double-edged case for Rjd2's departure as the Definitive Jux label's reigning hip-hop producer-of-record. On the one hand, there's nary a straightforward hip-hop cut to be found; Rjd2 plays every syrupy lick of these 15 tracks himself, mostly eschewing his much-used sampler in favor of live instruments and the voice he began testing with 2004's Since We Last Spoke.]

Son Volt - Search ($11.99) [Five albums into Son Volt's career--and a pair into the band's rebirth following leader Jay Farrar's several solo ventures--it's time to bury the encumbering 'alt-country' moniker that has dogged Farrar since his days in the genre-setting Uncle Tupelo. While the inexhaustible songwriter relied on guitars to drive 2005's rock-heavy Okemah and the Melody of Riot, Son Volt amends its familiar arrangements on The Search, balancing the instrumentation with piano, organ, and dabbles in a horn section. 'Feels like drivin' 'round in a slow hearse,' Farrar pleads over repetitive piano and East Indian guitar loops in 'Slow Hearse.']

Stooges - Weirdness ($9.99) [Their rudely urgent brand of earsplitting garage rock and bawdy English blues straddled the '60s into the '70s, but, sadly, the Stooges disintegrated in 1973, leaving their insurgent leader Iggy Pop to power through more than three decades of music alone. But a phone call to the surviving members and siblings Ron (guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums) to play on Pop's 2003 record Skull Ring led to the improbable: a full-on reunion of a band that served as a precursor to the so-called birth of punk rock that would follow three years after its breakup. After years aprt..finally a brand new Stooges release.]

Lucinda Williams - West ($10.99) [FREE with purchase is a RARE 'Exclusive Demo' while supplies lastThough the arrangements stray from Lucinda Williams's motherlode blend of blues, country, and folk, West may well be her best album. It is easily her most musically adventurous, and often her most lyrically inspired. Williams's singing has never sounded better, from the aching tenderness of 'Where Is My Love?' to the ravaged catharsis of 'Unsuffer Me.' ]
