Brand New - Devil And God are raging inside me
($11.99) [If the creative leap Brand New made between their debut 'Your Favorite Weapon' and its follow-up 2002's universally praised 'Deja Entendu' was a sign that the Long Island post-punk group were building something monumental, then 'The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me' is that something. ]
Brett Dennen - So Much More
($12.99) [When Brett came out with his first album, I thought to myself, 'wow, i don't know how he's going to top this cd, every song on here is great'. But when So Much More came out, it completely blew my mind away. I haven't heard anything so unique and powerful in my life. This is a MUST BUY]
Incubus - Light Grenades
($12.99) [A rare case in which a band actually gets better with time, this California hard rock quintet seems to have finally grown into its skin on its fifth album. Casting off the dated slap-bass funk and pointless nu-metal angst of its early years (well, mostly), Light Grenades is not only a worthwhile follow-up to 2003's A Crow Left of the Murder--the expansive disc many fans consider Incubus's best--but shows improvements all around.]
Loreena McKennitt - An Ancient Muse
($13.99) [It's been nearly a decade since Loreena McKennitt's last studio album, The Book of Secrets, but An Ancient Muse picks up the caravan exactly where she left off on her mystical journey through the cultures of the Middle East and northern Sahara. The Canadian singer opens this album the same way as she did her last two recordings: with an incantation, calling out in a wordless voice across an echoing space, cleansing the air and the mind.]
Gwen Stefani - Sweet Escape
($11.99) [Her first solo album 'Love. Angel. Music. Baby' went multi-platinum in the US alone and Stefani is even more metallically blonde on the cover of this follow-up. But then her style has never really been called into question, just the substance behind it. Her solo success and elevation to R&B aristocracy in America is all the more impressive given the mediocrity that preceded it, but with 'The Sweet Escape' Stefani consolidates her position, delivering another solid performance without ever raising the bar. ]
