Bright Eyes - Noise Floor
($10.39) [A collection of singles, one-offs, unreleased tracks, collaborations, and covers recorded between 1998 and 2005. Variously recorded to cassette four-track, mini-disc, reel-to-reel tape machine, ADAT and computer, these songs trace Bright Eyes' evolution from basement project to band of international repute. Many of these gems previously lost to out-of-print obscurity are hereby resurrected. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------]
Cowboy Junkies - Long Journey Home
($13.59) [Recorded and filmed at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in England at the end of their 2004 tour, Long Journey Home is one of the strongest performances the Cowboy Junkies have ever put on tape. The album and DVD feature stunning renditions of Junkies classics such as 'Sweet Jane' and 'Misguided Angel' along with recent favorites like 'Notes Falling Slow' and 'He Will Call You Baby,' plus several inspired cover songs, including a sublime version of Neil Young's 'Helpless.' Long Journey Home is a testament to why the Cowboy Junkies have remained one of the most original and important bands of the past 20 years.]
Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist
($13.59) [Produced by Bob Erzin (Pink Floyd, Jane's Addiction), the Sacramento band's fifth full-length release, Saturday Night Wrist, features the kind of envelope-pushing fans have come to expect, shifting between gloomy ballads ('Xerces,' 'Beware') and apocalyptic rockers ('Rapture,' 'Rats! Rats! Rats!') that in an instant allow singer Chino Moreno to take his dynamic voice from a whisper to a scream with help from guest vocalists such as System of a Down's Serj Tankian and Giant Drag's Annie Hardy.]
Lady Sovereign - Public Warning
($8.99) [as the 5-foot-1 rapper asserts, 'I'm the biggest midget in the fame.' Wicked, irreverent, smart, and full of self-depreciating humor, this queen of grime rap pillages her autobiography on 'Those Were the Days,' deconstructs nationalism on 'My England,' raids Mother Goose on 'Public Warning,' and then drops a gauntlet with a loud clattering sound, making listeners laugh out loud with the snotty, but laughable challenge of 'Love Me or Hate Me.' But mostly she keeps things moving, throwing off sparks and bon mots with her mad, furious, in-your-face flow, while adding a bit of glam and new wave to the electro hip-hop beats.]
My Chemical Romance - Black Parade
($13.59) [The Black Parade, My Chemical Romance's follow-up to its 2004 platinum major-label debut Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, 'is way more dramatic, way more theatrical, completely over the top, borderline psychotic,' says Gerard Way. 'It's the most pure, intense thing we've ever been involved in.' Producer by Rob Cavallo (Green Day), the album is a celebration of lvoe and death and darkness. Join The Black Parade]
Willie Nelson - Songbird
($11.99) [For better and for worse, this trans-generational pairing of Willie Nelson and producer Ryan Adams takes the veteran into musical territory where he wouldn't have likely ventured on his own. There's long been an organic unity to Nelson's signature sound--the way his conversational phrasing plays against the staccato runs of his gypsy guitar, with the backing of a band that's been with him so long he calls them Family. ]
Who - Endless Wire
($11.99) [Built from the triumph of the mini-opera Wire & Glass EP (included here in its entirety), Endless Wire mixes metaphors of music, war, and religion, while showcasing Roger Daltrey's ageless vocal cords and Pete Townshend at his windmilling best. Launching with a 'Baba O'Riley'-like synth break in 'Fragments,' Daltrey asks 'Are we breathing out or breathing in?' and Townshend answers with a thrashing, crashing Gibson. When the volume is turned up, there are echoes of three decades ago. ]
