Black Keys - Magic Potion
($11.99) [Magic Potion, the Black Keys' fourth album, is a spectacularly stripped-down set of sneakily melodic blues-besotted rock concocted in the Akron, Ohio basement studio of drummer Patrick Carney. Guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach is possessed of a compelling, hurt-beyond-his-years voice and an approach to lead guitar that is both wildly expressive and utterly succinct.]
Citizen Cope - Every Waking Moment
($8.99) ['Every Waking Moment' is not a departure from Cope's first two releases, as he sticks to the mellow but musically flavorful style that is highly recognizable as his own. But we love it, and cannot get enough of it. Some of the best songs on this record are the title track 'Every Waking Moment' reminicent of 'Sideways,' and the instrumental funker 'Awe.' ]
Fergie - Dutchess
($12.99) [Fergie is to The Black Eyed Peas is what Gwen Stefani is to No Doubt. She stands out, you knew she always had the potential to do something solo; you just did not know when. Also, like, Gwen, Fergie is a trendsetter, a great songwriter and is a chameleon when it comes to music.]
Diana Krall - From This Moment On
($12.99) [From This Moment On is an 11-song collection that captures the Canadian-born sensation in full swing, in great company, and at the top of her game. It could also be called her strongest, most cohesive release to date. Krall--for the few still unknowing--is the 41-year old sensation whose cool, heavy-lidded vocals and strikingly sensitive piano-playing has helped her transcend barriers of genre to become a popular artist of the first order who has carved herself a permanent position at the top of the jazz charts.]
Ben Kweller - Ben Kweller
($11.99) [Ben Kweller is yet another winner from the man of the same name. His fourth full-length concludes with 'This is War,' in which the music-mad scientist splices the garage-rock rhythms of the White Stripes with the pop smarts of the Raconteurs... and the Monkees (specifically 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone'). Has Kweller been listening to Jack White lately? Or did he just discover Nuggets? Either way, here's hoping he keeps it up as the tambourine-fueled rocker is one of his best.]
Jonny Lang - Turn Around
($11.99) [This is a well crafted, undeniably heartfelt set from Lang, who makes it abundantly clear he feels his destiny is to make the world a better place through Jesus. It's a valid enough objective that doesn't quite connect with Lang's rather heavy-handed lyrics, affected singing, and derivative tunes.]
Mars Volta - Amputechture
($10.99) [After diverging a bit with Frances the Mute, TMV has come back to a more polished sound. The album still has some of the spaciness of Mars, but is very different with the addition of more acoustic guitar, spanish, and a more mellow approach. The album is very expected. Whenever you expect the typical Mars jam after a slower section, it transitions into another completely different section. ]
Metheny Pat / Mehldau Brad - Metheny Mehldau
($12.99) [For Brad Mehldau, this collaboration started at that 'life-changing moment' when, as a 13-year-old, a friend played him 'Are You Going With Me' from the Pat Methany Group's 1982 live double-album, Travels. Years later, Pat Methany heard 'Chill' from saxophonist Joshua Redman's 1994 album Moodswing that featured Brad Mehldau on piano. Since, the two artists have forged an artistic partnership based on shared inspiration, not just mutual admiration. This album features music by both Methany and Mehldau, and was recorded at Right Track Studio (NYC) in December of 2005. ]
Madeleine Peyroux - Half the Perfect World
($12.99) [Smokey-voiced chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux's third CD is a lovely collection of after-hours ruminations and should confirm her rise to fame. Credit producer Larry Klein for doing a bang-up job with the album's sound: the elegant, pared-down arrangements are all brushed drums, acoustic guitars, and cool organ licks. But of course it's Peyroux's voice that brings it all home--preferably one where the shades are drawn, embers are smoldering in the fireplace, and the white wine is kept dry.]
TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
($8.99) [2006 sophomore release from this electronic, arty and atmospheric Post Punk-influenced band from Brooklyn. Features guest appearances from David Bowie and labelmates Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead) and Katrina Ford (Celebration). This is their first release for the highly influential 4AD label, which should increase their profile considerably.]
