Rory Block - Lady and Mr Johnson
($13.99) [The spirit of Robert Johnson and the Delta Blues tradition come to life on Rory Blocks Rykodisc debut, The Lady and Mr. Johnson. The recording, comprised entirely of Robert Johnsons music, may be the most compelling and important release in the celebrated blueswomans 40-year career. An expert slide guitarist and a masterful singer, Blocks unmatched understanding of the complexity and form of Johnsons music has gained her the resounding support and encouragement of the Johnson family and the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation.]
Greg Brown - Evening Call
($12.99) [Grammy nominee and folk/roots hero Greg Brown delivers his most realized album to date, mixing rough country, sweet folk, dark blues and slow grooves. His first CD of all original material in over 4 years, The Evening Call hits stores August 8th!]
Ani Difranco - Reprieve
($11.99) [Every new album from Ani DiFranco gives listeners a reason to get excited about music all over again, and her latest, Reprieve, is certainly no exception. Across 12 tracks, DiFranco ignites more of her signature blend of poetry, politics and musicianship. The album was tracked in her New Orleans studio in early 2005 during a break in her usually heavy touring schedule. Forced to leave the master recordings behind before Hurricane Katrina, she drove back into the city to retrieve them just three days after the levees broke. From there she headed back to overdub in her hometown of Buffalo with whatever instruments happened to be on hand. ]
Michael Franti & Spearhead - Yell Fire
($11.99) [In 2004, Franti and his team traveled to the core of the red-zoned, war torn neighborhoods of Baghdad, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip with his guitar, video cameras, and the intent to experience first hand the human cost of war. Out of this journey, he created a compelling documentary ('I Know I'm Not Alone') and a searing, reflective album of original songs. 'Yell Fire!' is his most compelling, engaged collection of songs, fired by a fury at the injustice of war, and a rediscovery of the love and community that supports those doing the fighting. It embraces reggae, blues, folk, hip-hop, and the anthemic politics.]
Maria Muldaur - Heart Of Mine - Love songs of Bob Dylan
($13.99) [The incomparable Maria Muldaur has always traversed a wide expanse of American music--in 2003, she recorded A Woman Alone with the Blues, a tribute to jazz icon Peggy Lee--and so perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that she has now applied her interpretive gifts to the love songs of Bob Dylan. Choosing from among his classics ('I'll Be Your Baby Tonight') and lesser-known works ('Golden Loom'), Muldaur bravely recasts several songs in disparate grooves (reggae, Cajun, swing), and even allows keyboardist David Torkanowsky to sneak a few bars of the jazz standard 'Ain't Misbehavin'' into the end of 'Moonlight.' ]
Bonnie Raitt - Bonnie Raitt & Friends
($18.99) [Judging from her two live releases, this and 1995's Road Tested, everyone's favorite slide-guitar-playing, rootsy redhead loves working with other musicians. Generally known for raising the visibility of older blues and R&B legends such as Ruth Brown and Charles Brown, she invites more contemporary stars Ben Harper, Norah Jones, Keb' Mo', and Alison Krauss along for this set. Recorded during a September 2005 evening, this slick CD/DVD package catches Raitt and her muscular four-piece on tour supporting Souls Alike. ]
Ali Farka Toure - Savane
($12.99) [Toure recorded Savane in the Malian capital of Bamako, as part of a three-disc project dubbed the Hotel Mande Sessions, after the studio in which the albums were cut. Savane is the last, perhaps most eloquent, installment. In concept and execution, the sessions recall teh magical combination of spontaneity and virtuosity that marked the debut releases from the Buena Vista Social Club. Toure offers reverberating, incantatory vocals to accompany his lean, hypnotically repetitive guitar lines.]
