Frank Black - Fast Man Raider Man
($15.99) [Recorded in the same casual manner as 2005's Honeycomb, in various hit-and-run sessions with superstar session musicians during gaps in the Pixies' unending reunion tour, Fast Man Raider Man abides by the this-will-do aesthetic that has been a hallmark of Frank Black's solo career. With songs seemingly made up on the spot, the singer delivers a thoroughly mellow 27-track double album that is largely free of the inscrutability and insanity of his most famous work. ]
Nelly Furtado - Loose
($11.99) [It stands to reason that gold and multiplatinum certifications (for 2003's Folklore and 2000's Whoa, Nelly!, respectively), a pair of Top 10 singles ('I'm Like a Bird' and 'Turn Off the Light'), and a Grammy Award (for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance), to name just a few accomplishments, would afford a certain level of confidence. But nothing has inspired Furtado to throw caution to the wind more than motherhood. 'Motherhood makes you fearless,' she says. 'The album is very youthful-sounding,' Furtado continues, 'and I think that's partly due to the presence of this two-year-old in my life. I was with her all day every day and then I'd go to the studio at night, and I think that translated into a playful energy I feel onstage but that hasn't really been heard on my records.' ]
Guster - Ganging Up On The Sun
($12.99) [Gusters playful yet literate, spirited and largely acoustic pop-rock returns with the endearing college favorites first studio album in three years. Ganging Up On The Sunproduced by Ron Aniello [Lifehouse, Barenaked Ladies and Gusters previous album, Keep It Together], the band, and new member Joe Pisapiaretains the unconventional, melodic pop craftsmanship and flawless harmonies that have garnered Guster one of the most devoted fan followings in the country. Guster brightens up the summer with Ganging Up On The Sun. ]
Keane - Under The Iron Sea
($11.99) [Keane have perfected their forebear's dark stadium-rock formula on their second album, all the more miraculous considering it was once again done without guitars. If Under the Iron Sea sounds considerably edgier than its predecessor, that's because it was recorded while the band was on the verge of splitting. But the friction has also given Keane a renewed sense of purpose, breaking the mid-tempo monotony with vibrant material such as 'Nothing in My Way' and 'Try Again': soaring songs that make the band sound unsinkable.]
Keb Mo - Suitcase
($11.99) [Handsomely spare and richly resonant, his new album Suitcase is a diverse collection of songs that the artist feels are his most personal to date, and his range and innate eloquence have never been better served. Keb' Mo's unvarnished vocals are bell-like in clarity through frank delivery and emotional constancy, and his acoustic and slide guitar mastery ring just as true. With laconic storytellin' and gritty country blues tunes, from broadside ballads to lilting odes to love, through mellow folk rags and fiery laments, Mo's seamless synthesis of roots idioms, pop ardor and lyrical dexterity is soulful and authentic.]
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
($11.99) [So what's interesting about 'Rather Ripped' is how Sonic Youth have at once made their most mature album, yet left none of their trademark edginess on the cutting room floor. It's worth noting, though, that the praise being lauded on 'Rather Ripped' over any of Sonic Youth's album's over the past few years is perhaps misguided. This isn't necessarily a superior album to 'Murray Street' or 'Sonic Nurse' (though it's certainly a more consistent one), it's more that 'Rather Ripped's great success is in refining the strengths of those records to something at once accessible and challenging. ]
Three Days Grace - One-X
($12.99) [Hailing from Canada, Three Days Grace find a way to rock hard, without losing the emotional, real connection they have to their audience. With songs from One-X that unleash sharp, relentless harmonies, matched with razor edged lyrics, the band is poised to take over the music scene once again.]
Walter Trout - Full Circle
($11.99) [With the release of FULL CIRCLE, Walter Trout has realized a long held dream to invite musician friends from his 35+ year career together to compose and play together. His first new studio release in five years, FULL CIRCLE reflects Walter Trouts remarkable story, from his humble beginnings as a sideman in many a blues legends band through his rising solo star, arriving as one of blues musics beloved interpreters. ]
