Johnny Cash - Personal File ($18.99) [The recordings Johnny Cash started making for Rick Rubin's American label in 1993 launched a journey through the Great American Songbook--from traditional tunes to alt-rock--that continued until, literally, the end of his life. What wasn't known at the time was that Cash had anticipated the American Recordings concept 20 years earlier. A series of informal private sessions he recorded in 1973 featuring just voice and guitar--with a few numbers added between then and 1982--were left untouched at his House of Cash studio, unearthed only after his death in 2003. These 49 songs, labeled 'Personal File,' show him exploring 19th-century parlor tunes, Tin Pan Alley pop, gospel, little-known Cash originals, classic and contemporary country, and even a recitation of Robert Service's poem 'The Cremation of Sam McGee.']

Dixie Chicks - Taking the long way ($12.99) [With Taking The Long Way, one of the most anticipated albums in recent years, the Dixie Chicks are putting themselves out there like never before. For the first time, every one of the disc's fourteen songs are co-written by the Chicks themselves, exploring themes both deeply private and resoundingly political. Collaborating with legendary producer Rick Rubin ]

Mason Jennings - Boneclouds ($11.99) [After four independent label releases, Mason Jennings became one of the first signings to the major subsidiary label of Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock. His naturally articulated, mid-range vocals bring to me the equally inviting Donovan, especially on 'Some Say I'm Not,' with its exotic rhythmic bed. The songs are full of a sort of optimistic searching, both romantic and spiritual. With the songs anchored by a first person vantage point, Jennings' friendly timbre makes for an utterly believable narrator.]

Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers ($11.99) [Smothered by the indulgence of his rock star ranking, Jack White steps into the eccentricities of the supergroup, and at first glance, this seems to be a band where White's imposing presence could overshadow the rest. Not the case with these Raconteurs. Teaming with fellow Detroit songwriter Brendan Benson and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, the rhythm section from Cincinnati band the Greenhornes, White exhales a bit, deferring enough to his mates to make Broken Boy Soldiers play like a team effort. Following the Benson blueprint, 'Steady as She Goes,' which opens as a slice of 1960's radio pop, the record steers away from pigeonholing the rest of the way. White's in a Middle Eastern mood for the title track as he pulls off a wicked Robert Plant howl, while Lawrence and Keeler excel on the chorus-strong 'Intimate Secretary' and the optimistic acoustic rocker 'Yellow Sun.' ]

Paul Simon - Surprise ($12.99) [Among the most popular artists and greatest songwriters of our time, Paul Simon returns with his first album in six yearsand the album titled Surprise is exactly that. First, three songs were co-written with electronic music guru Brian Eno; second, the other songs are straightforward, wonderfully American pop. Surprise is a pleasant surprise for Simon fans. ]

Wreckers - Stand still look pretty ($13.99) [The Wreckers are about creation, not destruction. Bringing together two young, fearless female singersongwriter-acoustic guitaristsGrammy-winning, platinum-selling Michelle Branch and collaborator Jessica HarpThe Wreckers debut album, Stand Still, Look Pretty, blends Branchs pop-rock sensibility with Harps country-folk style. Edgy yet rootsy, on Stand Still, Look Pretty, The Wreckers have a ball. ]

Neil Young - Living with war ($12.99) [Even if you don't agree with Neil Young's politics, you can't help but be daunted by the intersection of his genius and ire on his second album in less than seven months. It is the very rare artist who is able to channel indignation and moral disgust in such a coherent and forceful way--without sacrificing any of the vivid imagery, passion, or the high level of musicality that we have come to expect from him over the past four decades. But that's not what elevates this album: it's his pure, naked, visceral reaction to the Bush administration's foreign policy, building on a canon of outrage that he began with 1970's 'Ohio,' penned in the wake of the Kent State student deaths. But here he goes one better, filling in the lines that he began to draw on 2003's Greendale about a family caught in changing times.]
