T-Bone Burnett - True False Identity
($13.99) [T-Bone Burnett has been hard at it since his last record of original son gs in 1992: nominated for a songwriting Oscar, winning a production Grammy, composing movie soundtracks, and serving as one of his trade's most valuable studio musicians. But with those most fascinated by his remarkable resume, it's all about the songwriting, and on The True False Identity, Burnett substantiates his role as a composer and performer steeped in traditional American music.]
Gnarls Barkley - St Elsewhere
($10.99) [Gnarls Barkley is the highly anticipated collaboration from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo. Danger Mouse is one of the most important artist/producers in music today. 'Demon Days' sold over 5 million worldwide and Dangerdoom's 'The Mouse And The Mask' sold over 100,000 units. Accolades include GQ's 'Men Of The Year' honor; Spin's 'Eccentric Genius Of The Year', NME's 'Hottest Hip-Hop Producer In The World', ]
Mason Jennings - Boneclouds
($11.99) [After four independent label releases, Mason Jennings became one of the first signings to the major subsidiary label of Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock. His naturally articulated, mid-range vocals bring to me the equally inviting Donovan, especially on 'Some Say I'm Not,' with its exotic rhythmic bed. The songs are full of a sort of optimistic searching, both romantic and spiritual. With the songs anchored by a first person vantage point, Jennings' friendly timbre makes for an utterly believable narrator.]
Mark Knopfler / Emmylou Harris - All the roadrunning
($11.99) [Over the last seven years, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris quietly recorded an album by stealing 'a few precious hours of studio time here and there,' as the ex-Dire Straits singer/guitarist puts it. Good thing they kept it largely under wraps--expectations would have pushed through the clouds, especially as Knopfler conjured 10 of the 12 cuts, and Harris, who writes potently, but little, contributed two ('Love and Happiness,' 'Belle Starr'). Yet now that it's here, All the Roadrunning--while beautiful--seems somehow underwhelming, and without a true centerpiece. Anyone familiar with the artists' famous catalogues would expect the repertoire to be poetic and brooding, and that Harris's ethereal soprano would add light to Knopfler's dark Prozac rumblings. ]
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
($11.99) [Back is the punk rock energy that harkens on vintage 1991 grunge in songs 'Comatose', 'Life Wasted', and 'Severed Hand.' 'World Wide Suicide', their first successful single in a long time, brings the more recent political angle of frontman Vedder with his more melancholic rage. When he sings, 'Medals on a wooden mantle/ Next to a handsome face/ That the president took for granted/ Writing checks that others pay', it comes out coughing rather than clean. Vedder's mumbling couldn't come at a better time when the world is so confused and headed toward disaster. ]
Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers
($11.99) [Smothered by the indulgence of his rock star ranking, Jack White steps into the eccentricities of the supergroup, and at first glance, this seems to be a band where White's imposing presence could overshadow the rest. Not the case with these Raconteurs. Teaming with fellow Detroit songwriter Brendan Benson and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, the rhythm section from Cincinnati band the Greenhornes, White exhales a bit, deferring enough to his mates to make Broken Boy Soldiers play like a team effort. Following the Benson blueprint, 'Steady as She Goes,' which opens as a slice of 1960's radio pop, the record steers away from pigeonholing the rest of the way. White's in a Middle Eastern mood for the title track as he pulls off a wicked Robert Plant howl, while Lawrence and Keeler excel on the chorus-strong 'Intimate Secretary' and the optimistic acoustic rocker 'Yellow Sun.' ]
Paul Simon - Surprise
($12.99) [Among the most popular artists and greatest songwriters of our time, Paul Simon returns with his first album in six yearsand the album titled Surprise is exactly that. First, three songs were co-written with electronic music guru Brian Eno; second, the other songs are straightforward, wonderfully American pop. Surprise is a pleasant surprise for Simon fans. ]
Bruce Springsteen - We shall overcome: Seeger Sessions
($14.99) ['We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' features Bruce's personal interpretations of thirteen traditional songs, all of them associated with the legendary guiding light of American folk music, Pete Seeger, for whom the album is named. Speaking of the origins of the new music, Springsteen said, 'So much of my writing, particularly when I write acoustically, comes straight out of the folk tradition. Making this album was creatively liberating because I have a love of all those different roots sounds... they can conjure up a world with just a few notes and a few words.' Springsteen recorded the album with a large ensemble.]
Tool - 10000 Days
($12.99) [Sonically relentless and visually groundbreaking only begin to describe the Tool experience. Formed in Los Angeles, CA in 1990, Tool has cemented themselves in today's hard music community with uncompromising attitude and vision. With just one EP and three album releases over a 15-year span, Tool has created a loyal and even rabid fan base, selling over 10 million albums and half a million videos in the U.S. alone.]
Neil Young - Living with war
($12.99) [Even if you don't agree with Neil Young's politics, you can't help but be daunted by the intersection of his genius and ire on his second album in less than seven months. It is the very rare artist who is able to channel indignation and moral disgust in such a coherent and forceful way--without sacrificing any of the vivid imagery, passion, or the high level of musicality that we have come to expect from him over the past four decades. But that's not what elevates this album: it's his pure, naked, visceral reaction to the Bush administration's foreign policy, building on a canon of outrage that he began with 1970's 'Ohio,' penned in the wake of the Kent State student deaths. But here he goes one better, filling in the lines that he began to draw on 2003's Greendale about a family caught in changing times.]
