Drive By Truckers - A blessing and a curse
($11.99) [Equal parts back porch historians, runaway drunken firecrackers, and poets of the hard life and how to live it; they came on the scene and set the bar higher for what you can do with the music we love. The songs on this record illustrate the triumphant struggle it is to survive and thrive in this world. Its not only a great record, but an important statement delivered honestly and passionately without any sugar coating or details spared. Its a refinement, a honing, and a focusing of what youve always loved about them, what makes this band the greatest band in the world. ]
Mat Kearney - Nothing Left To Lose
($8.99) [For singer-songwriter Mat Kearney, Nothing Left To Lose, is about how the echoes of your past can guide you through what lies ahead. On the title-track of his major-label debut, Kearney retraces the long road that brought him from his hometown in Eugene, OR to his adopted home in Nashville, Tennessee. Written to make sense of his life, Nothing Left To Lose looks at the past to see the future. ]
Mark Knopfler / Emmylou Harris - All the roadrunning
($11.99) [Over the last seven years, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris quietly recorded an album by stealing 'a few precious hours of studio time here and there,' as the ex-Dire Straits singer/guitarist puts it. Good thing they kept it largely under wraps--expectations would have pushed through the clouds, especially as Knopfler conjured 10 of the 12 cuts, and Harris, who writes potently, but little, contributed two ('Love and Happiness,' 'Belle Starr'). Yet now that it's here, All the Roadrunning--while beautiful--seems somehow underwhelming, and without a true centerpiece. Anyone familiar with the artists' famous catalogues would expect the repertoire to be poetic and brooding, and that Harris's ethereal soprano would add light to Knopfler's dark Prozac rumblings. ]
Pretty Girls Make Graves - Elan Vital
($11.99) [The Seattle quintet's follow-up to the universally acclaimed 'The New Romance', and their first album since the addition of keyboardist Leona Marrs, is by far their most ambitious, multifarious, and scorching to date. Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer), 'Elan Vital' provides the band with a bigger, bolder canvas with which to weave their magic. The new material, road-tested at gigs around the globe with Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, and Death Cab For Cutie, shows a blindingly original American band who are improving with each successive album.]
Bruce Springsteen - We shall overcome: Seeger Sessions
($14.99) ['We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' features Bruce's personal interpretations of thirteen traditional songs, all of them associated with the legendary guiding light of American folk music, Pete Seeger, for whom the album is named. Speaking of the origins of the new music, Springsteen said, 'So much of my writing, particularly when I write acoustically, comes straight out of the folk tradition. Making this album was creatively liberating because I have a love of all those different roots sounds... they can conjure up a world with just a few notes and a few words.' Springsteen recorded the album with a large ensemble.]
Streets - Hardest way to make an easy living
($11.99) [The new Streets album The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living, out April 25th, is a completely autobiographical record that covers everything that has happened to Mike over the past few years since he's become a well known figure in the UK. There's love, loss, scandal, violence, sex, drugs and a whole load of bad behavior and regret. This true story begins with the first single, 'When You Wasn't Famous.' ]
Taking Back Sunday - Louder Now
($11.99) [The bands Warner Bros. debut, Louder Now, takes the group's classic ethos of intertwining vocals and hardcore meets-rock-meets pop to an even more enticing level. Taking Back Sunday is taking back rock. ]
Various - Coachella / Various (2PC) / (Dig)
($21.99) [Coachella, the feature length film based on America's premiere showcase for alternative, cutting-edge music, comes to DVD filled with one classic performance after another gathered from the 6-year history of the festival. The iconic headliners and forward-looking newcomers include Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers, White Stripes and many more. Coachella: The Film is already taking its place beside concert epics such as Woodstock as the musical portrait of a generation. ]
