E-40 - My ghetto report card
($12.99) ['It's all good,' 'fo'shezzy, fo'shizzle' and 'what's up pimpin' are all phrases originated by E-40. He also named Hyphy, the San Francisco Bay Area movement Rolling Stone has anointed as the 'hot new scene.' With each of his most recent seven albums having reached the R&B/Hip-Hop Top 10, the acclaimed platinum-selling rapmaster now teams with executive producer Lil Jon for My Ghetto Report Card-and Hyphy goes to the head of the class. ]
Donald Fagen - Morph The Cat
($12.99) [The first solo album in 13 years from Donald Fagen, Morph The Cat is another contemporary classic from half of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo Steely Dan. With Fagan's adventurous musical depth, uniquely layered lyrics and entertaining subject matter (from a conversation with the ghost of Ray Charles to a romantic liaison with an airport security guard named Joan), Morph the Cat is the newest chapter chronicling the most sophisticated music in rock. ]
David Gilmour - On An Island
($12.99) [this is but the third album by the Pink Floyd guitarist, and first in 18 years. But that seemingly lackadaisical career ethos hasnt prevented Gilmour from producing some of his finest work here, an album whose soaring, lyrical guitar lines will be familiar to Floyd fans, yet one also blessed by often surprising nuances and delicate musical textures. Gilmours Division Bell collaborator Polly Samson is credited with most of the writing, helping conjure a moody, texturally rich 'island' thats as much musical as it is personally and lyrically metaphorical.]
Ben Harper - Both sides of the gun
($11.99) [On his albums with the Innocent Criminals, Harper has alternated songs based in different styles, from Led Zeppelin-esque rock to trad-gospel to various strains of blues and R&B and folk pop. On his new album, Both Sides of the Gun, Harper goes about all of this in a more organized fashion. The eighteen songs of Gun come on two discs, although they could have fit on one -- the idea was to break the album into halves rather than make an epic double album. The first contains rock-based uptempos, the second features ballads whose arrangements often employ symphonic strings. At the same time, Gun is intentionally less polished than 2003's Diamonds on the Inside -- more instrumentally jumpy and sonically visceral. ]
Little Willies - Little Willies
($12.99) [THE LITTLE WILLIES are NORAH JONES, Lee Alexander, Jim Campilongo, Richard Julian and Dan Rieser. On their self-titled debut CD they cover a range of songs by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt and Fred Rose, as well as bandmember originals. ]
Matisyahu - Youth
($11.99) [The thumbnail description of Matisyahu: File under Hasidic Beatbox Reggae. Despite having markings of novelty, it's really nothing of the sort. Fronted by a man named Matisyahu (born Matthew Miller), they are truly a band. Youth benefits from a more expansive sound and production by the fantastic Bill Laswell (Golden Palominos, Laurie Anderson, the Last Poets). Matisyahu's singing and the substance of his songs (spiritual living, self-awareness, the value of knowledge and learning, kindness to others) are presented with a loving sincerity, and buoyed by tremendous musicianship.]
Van Morrison - Pay The Devil
($10.99) [With stunning album-length explorations of jazz and 1950s acoustic skiffle and a country-rockabilly collaboration with Linda Gail Lewis behind him, Van Morrison continues exploring classic country with compelling reinterpretations of standards from the 1950s to the 1970s. He reaches back over half a century for Hank Williams Sr.'s 'Half As Much,' 'Your Cheatin' Heart,' and 'My Bucket's Got a Hole in It' and Webb Pierce's landmark honky-tonk hits 'Back Street Affair,' 'There Stands the Glass,' and 'More and More.' Moving to the mid-'60s, he capably explores George Jones's 'Things Have Gone to Pieces' and Connie Smith's 'Once a Day.']
Murs - Murrays Revenge
($9.99) [A prominent figure in the hip-hop community for over a decade with his group, Living Legends, Murs has also released three solo projects and recorded albums with Slug of Atmosphere and 9th Wonder (Little Brother). This is his latest solo offering, an inspiring and action-packed release continuing the successful collaboration with longtime friend and famed producer 9th Wonder. 'Murs hooks grimy battle rhymes and urban realism to arty West Coast crunk']
Prince - 3121
($11.99) [This is one of the best albums from Prince. It is raw, funk oriented, with unbelievable drums, bass, synths, guitars, vocals, melodies... It is nothing like 'Musicology'. I thought 'Musicology' was decent album too but this one will blow your mind with its originality and power. I did not expect it be that good, honestly. You can dance to it, you can think to it... It is stunning!!!]
