Arctic Monkeys - Whatever people say I am, thats what I am not
($9.99) [Musically, there are bits of The Stone Roses, 'What's The Story Morning Glory', and 'Nevermind'. As catchy as those reference points are, it's the songwriting that has won the band a fiercely dedicated following; a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and 'Ghost Town' era Specials. Two #1 UK singles. Press already lined up with Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and Interview, to name a few.]
David Gilmour - On An Island
($12.99) [this is but the third album by the Pink Floyd guitarist, and first in 18 years. But that seemingly lackadaisical career ethos hasnt prevented Gilmour from producing some of his finest work here, an album whose soaring, lyrical guitar lines will be familiar to Floyd fans, yet one also blessed by often surprising nuances and delicate musical textures. Gilmours Division Bell collaborator Polly Samson is credited with most of the writing, helping conjure a moody, texturally rich 'island' thats as much musical as it is personally and lyrically metaphorical.]
Hawthorne Heights - If only you were lonely
($11.99) [HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS is taking over the world, one broken heart at a time. Since the 2004 release of their Victory Records powerhouse debut album, The Silence In Black And White, HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS spent every single week of 2005 in the Top 200. They have headlined sold out tours in the US and UK, headlined Warped Tour 2005, appeared in every major music publication, are in heavy rotation on MTV and Fuse, and have toured with the likes of SUM 41 and FALL OUT BOY. ]
Little Willies - Little Willies
($12.99) [THE LITTLE WILLIES are NORAH JONES, Lee Alexander, Jim Campilongo, Richard Julian and Dan Rieser. On their self-titled debut CD they cover a range of songs by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt and Fred Rose, as well as bandmember originals. ]
Matisyahu - Youth
($11.99) [The thumbnail description of Matisyahu: File under Hasidic Beatbox Reggae. Despite having markings of novelty, it's really nothing of the sort. Fronted by a man named Matisyahu (born Matthew Miller), they are truly a band. Youth benefits from a more expansive sound and production by the fantastic Bill Laswell (Golden Palominos, Laurie Anderson, the Last Poets). Matisyahu's singing and the substance of his songs (spiritual living, self-awareness, the value of knowledge and learning, kindness to others) are presented with a loving sincerity, and buoyed by tremendous musicianship.]
Van Morrison - Pay The Devil
($10.99) [With stunning album-length explorations of jazz and 1950s acoustic skiffle and a country-rockabilly collaboration with Linda Gail Lewis behind him, Van Morrison continues exploring classic country with compelling reinterpretations of standards from the 1950s to the 1970s. He reaches back over half a century for Hank Williams Sr.'s 'Half As Much,' 'Your Cheatin' Heart,' and 'My Bucket's Got a Hole in It' and Webb Pierce's landmark honky-tonk hits 'Back Street Affair,' 'There Stands the Glass,' and 'More and More.' Moving to the mid-'60s, he capably explores George Jones's 'Things Have Gone to Pieces' and Connie Smith's 'Once a Day.']
Beth Orton - Comfort Of Strangers
($12.99) [Few vocalists equal the expressive subtlety of Beth Orton, whose fourth album is both her most musically spare and artistically complex to date. Not only does the production and backing by Jim O'Rourke (known for his work with Sonic Youth and Wilco) capture Orton's vocal style at its most unstudied and unvarnished, the lack of embellishment focuses all the more attention on her songwriting. From the jazzy phrasing on the deceptively jaunty 'Worms' through the haunting 'Feral' and the amazing grace of the closing, hymnlike 'Pieces of Sky,' Orton's songs give voice to the sort of knotty, prickly emotions that are as hard to define as they are deeply felt.]
Hank Williams III - Straight To Hell
($13.99) [A new album from Hank Williams III is always a revelation: first, because it came out at all (his relationship with his label is as stormy as the marriage of his legendary grandparents); and second, because of its content and execution. So it's something of a miracle to see a 2-CD set of some of III's most hardcore Hellbilly (as opposed to the relentless screaming of his Assjack), especially as a number of the songs had been scheduled to appear on his unreleased 2003 album Thrown Out of the Bar. Hank III calls the new offering--recorded mostly on a $500 machine, for a DIY sound--a 'thrill ride into a life of sin.' ]
