Bela Fleck & Flecktones - Hidden Land ($12.99) [After a year-long tour hiatus, Bela Fleck and his talented group (Jeff Coffin on sax, Vic Wooten on bass and Futureman on synthaxe drumitar) are now returning to touring. The 'Hidden Land' album ushers in this touring schedule and is the first guest-less release from the Flecktones since before Jeff Coffin joined the band 8 years ago. The album features some excellent song-writing and, as always, superb musical chops. I was also pleasantly surprised by the lack of 'filler' songs (which were rife and distracting on 'Little Worlds'.) This disc has a crisp and well-produced sound that meshes well with the more minimalist approach of the quartet. ]

Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Long Walk To Freedom ($12.99) [For more than 30 years, South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo has infused its township sound of Isicathamiya with rich gospel harmonies. LBM's unique sound was brought to American audiences thanks to Paul Simon's landmark Graceland, and the group has toured and recorded tirelessly since. Long Walk To Freedom is a new retrospective in which the group rerecords new versions of songs from throughout its career with help from such guests as Emmylou Harris, Sarah McLachlan, Taj Mahal, and Zap Mama as well as several popular countrymen. As with the Simon album, the North American guests' voices fit hand-in-glove with the group's warm harmonies. Highlights include 'Nomathemba,' which was the band's first hit in 1973, the popular 'Hello My Baby,' and the Graceland tunes 'Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes' and 'Homeless.' Though ostensibly a career retrospective, this new recording actually proves that Ladysmith Black Mambazo has never sounded better. --Tad Hendrickson]

Beth Orton - Comfort Of Strangers ($12.99) [Few vocalists equal the expressive subtlety of Beth Orton, whose fourth album is both her most musically spare and artistically complex to date. Not only does the production and backing by Jim O'Rourke (known for his work with Sonic Youth and Wilco) capture Orton's vocal style at its most unstudied and unvarnished, the lack of embellishment focuses all the more attention on her songwriting. From the jazzy phrasing on the deceptively jaunty 'Worms' through the haunting 'Feral' and the amazing grace of the closing, hymnlike 'Pieces of Sky,' Orton's songs give voice to the sort of knotty, prickly emotions that are as hard to define as they are deeply felt.]

KT Tunstall - Eye to the telescope ($8.99) [KT Tunstall is a sparkling new songwriter with Chinese blood, a Scottish heart, great legwarmers & a cool name. KT celebrates classic singer-songwriting in the tradition of Rikki Lee Jones, Carol King & Fleetwood Mac with an articulate, accessible, immediate brew of rootsy sass, wistful quandary & after-hours atmosphere. KT's unique perspective offers a rare emotionally connecting intensity through it's gripping lyrical bite & heartfelt melody. Her debut album Eye To The Telescope is the creative consequence of an inquiring imagination with production duties supplied by Steve Osborne (U2, New Order, Doves).]

Various Artists - I am the resurrection: Tribute to John Fahey ($11.99) [An idiosyncratic folk favorite and a huge influence on acoustic guitarists, the reclusive John Fahey reemerged as an unlikely inspiration on a younger generation of indie underground rockers during the years before his death in 2001. The result is this freewheeling, wide-ranging tribute that is much more concerned with capturing his unpredictable spirit than mummifying a musical form. Sonic Youth's Lee Renaldo makes his interpretation a noise collage of electric guitar, traffic sounds, and spoken word. Sufjan Stevens melds a propulsive intro to a stripped-down, harmony-laden hymn. Coproducer M. Ward plays barbed-wire electric guitar, while Giant Sand's Howe Gelb interprets Fahey on solo piano that is part barrelhouse, part music box.]

Various Artists - Lotta Love Concert- Tribute to Nicolette Larson ($12.99) [Best known for her Top 10 1979 hit version of Neil Young's 'Lotta Love,' Nicolette Larson was cherished throughout the music world for her anglic harmonies and distinctive vocals. She sang backup on countless rock, pop, and country tracks, and released a string of acclaimed solo albums, beginning with her stellar '79 debut LP Nicolette. Her friends organized two nights of all-star tribute concerts in Santa Monica, CA. ]
