Apple Fiona - Extraordinary Machine ($12.99) [Fiona Apple, brooding, brainy belter and capital-A artist of near forbidding depth, begins her much gossiped-over third CD on a lark. The title track, one of two songs produced by Jon Brion before the label dispute that prompted hip-hop producer Mike Elizondo (50 Cent, Eminem) to step in, sounds like a Judy Garland number slathered with irony or something Rufus Wainwright might have had a hand in--strings soar, beats bump around skittishly, and notes require a ladder. But playful as it is, by the time the chorus kicks in it's clear why the world has missed Fiona Apple so much. Young female artists who have stepped into the spotlight since she fled it six years ago]

Browne Jackson - Solo acoustic vol 1 ($13.99) [Brownes latest album release is 2005s Jackson Browne Solo Acoustic Vol. 1, presenting twelve songs culled from his acclaimed solo acoustic concerts performed worldwide over the past few years. The disc also captures spirited and humorous exchanges between Jackson and his audience, making for an intimate listening experience. Presenting twelve songs culled from Brownes extensive and critically acclaimed solo acoustic concerts around the world over the past few years, the disc also captures both spirited and humorous exchanges between Jackson and his audiences, making for a truly intimate listening ]

Franz Ferdinand - You could have it so much better ($12.99) [After more than a year spent on the road behind their breakthrough self-titled debut--just how many times can Alex Kapranos sing 'Take Me Out' without getting his skinny tie into a knot, anyway?--you might expect the members of Franz Ferdinand to feel a little frayed around the edges. It's a stunning, confident piece of work that suggests the band is merely getting started.]

Guy Buddy - Bring em in ($13.99) [The Chicago blues legend's recent divorce is weighing on his mind, if 'Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed' and 'Now You're Gone' are to be believed. That's bad for Buddy Guy, but good for his fans, who, on these contemplative, regretful numbers, get treated to some of Guy's most sweetly improvisational and melodic guitar since his '60s hallmark A Man and the Blues. There's slash 'n' burn, too, as he gunfights with Carlos Santana on 'I Put a Spell on You' and squeezes pure heart from his strings teaming with John Mayer on 'I've Got Dreams to Remember.' Guy also plays prettily and trades vocals with Tracy Chapman on a rote but right 'Ain't No Sunshine,' although Robert Randolph and Keith Richards are slight on 'Lay Lady Lay' and 'The Price You Gotta Pay,' respectively. Guy hasn't cut this many classics in a while, but he channels enough raw, emotional sensitivity to make the oldies sound like they're pumping fresh blood.]

Parton Dolly - Those were the days ($14.99) [Like 1996's Treasures, this covers collection by Dolly Parton might seem, on the surface, to be a gimmicky filler in her prestigious catalog of some of country's finest originals. Yet it's a vast improvement. Those Were the Days, largely bluegrass-inspired and featuring a plethora of famous duet and harmony partners, has more than a few sterling moments. And that's not just because songs like 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone?,' 'Blowin' in the Wind,' 'Both Sides Now,' and 'Twelfth of Never' find her paired with the likes of Norah Jones, Lee Ann Womack, Nickel Creek, Judy Collins, and Keith Urban.]

Phair Liz - Somebody's Miracle ($14.99) [Some tracks on this album, including 'Got My Own Thing,' 'Why I Lie,' and 'Can't Get Out of What I'm into,' go back to Phair's more cynical roots. (In fact, 'Can't Get Out,' dates back to the singer's early demos.) But it seems clear that her overall trend towards pop (exhibited on her self-titled CD from 2003) is continuing. And who can blame her? Exile in Guyville was a breakthrough, but it left her in a real bind.]

Tedeschi Susan - Hope & Desire ($13.99) [The sweet, husky mix of sugar and sandpaper in two-time Grammy nominee Susan Tedeschi's voice breathes sultry life into the art of classic soul singing on Hope and Desire, her fourth album. It's somewhat disappointing that she's chosen to defer her own songwriting in favor of classics and obscurities by Ray Charles ('Tired of My Tears'), Dylan ('Lord Protect My Child'), the Rolling Stones ('You Got the Silver'), and others. She's also left her guitar at home, assigning the exceptional playing to Clapton sideman Doyle Bramhall, Jr., and her husband, the Allman Brothers' Derek Trucks.]

Twista - Day After ($14.99) [Multi platinum Grammy nominated rapper Twista is back once again with his new album, The Day After. The album features 14 new tracks created by Twista and award winning producers, including Scott Storch, Timbaland, Neptunes, Toxic, Cuzo, and David Banner. It also features appearances by Pitbull, Pharrell Williams, Trey Songz and Jamie Foxx. Famed for his rapid-fire flow, Twista has long been among hip-hop's most in-demand MC's]

Young Neil - Prarie Wind ($12.99) [An artist for all musical seasons, Neil Young returns to autumnal harvest mode on Prairie Wind, with homespun material and sing-song melodies that renew the spirit of some of his most popular releases. Yet the mood here is darker in its maturity than on Harvest and Harvest Moon--the previous releases in what now sounds like a trilogy--and the arrangements have greater range and aural depth, with Wayne Jackson of the soulful Memphis Horns, the Fisk University Jubilee Singers gospel choir, and a string section employed to striking effect. This is a song cycle of dreams, memories, family ties, and the passage of time--what is lost and what endures. The elliptical, epic 'No Wonder,' with its evocation of 9/11, ranks with the most ambitious songs of Young's career, while 'Falling Off the Face of the Earth,' 'It's a Dream,' and the bluesy title cut combine childlike innocence with unsettling experience. ]
